Horsens is a Danish city with roots stretching back to the Viking Age, once a bustling trading spot along Horsens Fjord. Known later for its industrial growth, it also holds a dramatic past as home to Denmark’s most famous state prison. Today, the city has reinvented itself with modern cultural attractions, lively music festivals, and restored historic sites. Horsens offers a mix of Viking history, industrial heritage, and vibrant city life.

Walking through Horsens for us was a nice change of scenery on our Denmark road trip. We had been along the western danish coastline for a few days until we started to head east and spent some time in this town. We really enjoyed the cobblestone streets and the chill vibe of the town.

We started off with a quick fika (coffee and pastry) at Et Brod before continuing on our way through the city. We talked to a ceramics dealer for a bit about his life’s work and meandered through some of the alleyways in the city center. Overall we stayed two nights in Horsens which was plenty we felt to get a good understanding of what the city represents.

If you like some of my photos that you have come across, just know that I have many prints showcasing a variety of landscapes available for purchase below! (Sold as Posters, Canvas, or in Metal-Frames and Wooden-Frames).

From Horsens, we decided to check out Ebeltoft for the day, which is about an hour’s drive northeast. I highly recommend this day trip to see that small town, it’s historic center as well as its glass art museum.

Horsens is also a great stop if you have just been to the Lego House/Legoland in Billund. Furthermore, it was the perfect stopover point before we headed east later on to the island of Fyn and our final destination of Copenhagen.

If you are a music lover, you will also see that Horsens is a VERY popular stop for musicians who are touring. This is because of a strategic cultural rebranding, transforming the city into a vibrant event hub that offers both major international acts and local Danish music.

This is of course also due to the large capacity of Nordstern Arena that hosts most of the biggest names such a Bruce Springsteen and Madonna. How fun would it be to coincide your trip with a concert to see your favorable musician play live?!
